Assam is known for Assam tea and Assam silk. The first oil well in Asia was drilled in Assam. The state is home to the one-horned Indian rhinoceros and through conservation it has been saved from near extinction, along with the pygmy hog, tiger and various species of Asiatic birds. Assam also provides one of the last wild habitats for the Asian elephant. Assam economy is aided by wildlife tourism. The state is filled with numerous ethnic groups each with colorful customs and rich heritages.
